I’m not sure about you, I get a lot of inspiration and concrete ideas from lots of wonderful chefs that I follow on Instagram. This recipe came from Thomas King @vegan_tk. Thomas loves spice and lots of flavour, I knew it would be a winner.
Pretty simple to make too. You will use circles of tofu for your scallops, create a yummy marinade and use the marinate to sauté the tofu. Absolutely delightful. We served ours with steamed broccoli and black rice…. a feast for kings and queens.
What you will need for your Sweet and Savoury Tofu Scallops Recipe
1 package of medium-firm tofu, I pressed mine and cut it into two slabs
For the marinade/sauté sauce
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 2 Tablespoons Tamari (Bragg seasoning or soy sauce)
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 thumb-size piece of ginger, peel off and minced
- 2 Tablespoon Sambal Oelek (chilli paste)
- 1 Tablespoon hot sauce
- 1-2 shallots, sliced
Finish with black sesame seeds and a squeeze of lemon.
How to make this Vegan Sweet and Savoury Tofu Scallops Recipe
- Prepare and mix all the ingredients for the marinade and sauté sauce. You use the same sauce for both. Set it aside.
- Cut your tofu into 2 slabs, gently press and then cut circles out of each slab. I was able to squeeze 3-4 per slab
- Score the top and bottom of each circle – this makes the flavour sink in, and they will look more like a scallop
- Place the tofu scallops into the marinade and pour some on the top two. Marinade the scallops for a couple of hours. Ensure the marinade is basted on the scallops as needed
- Heat up a sauté pan on medium-hot and place the tofu scallops in the pan with care. Pour on the marinade and cook down till about ½ the marinade is left and the scallops are beautiful brown.
- Finish with black sesame seeds and a squeeze of lemon.
Serve with your favourite sides or just eat them up…. cause they are that good.
