Seitan Strips
Seitan Strips, my new favourite BBQ vegan food!
A friend of mine brought me a jar of BBQ sauce that he had just made. The recipe comes from his grandmother and he made one batch vegan and gave me some to try. Rayce you are a sweetheart and you made my day!
Now I wanted to be sure that I did something special with his BBQ sauce and these Seitan Strips were just what I was looking for.
I started researching recipes and improvised a recipe I found on One Green Planet’s http://www.onegreenplanet.org/ I took the basic recipe and added my own flare to and of course Rayce’s yummy vegan BBQ sauce!
I wish you could have been over for dinner that night, they were that good. Hey it you want to find out to make them yourself, keep reading….
Seitan Strips
The recipe has two parts, The first is to create the Seitan Strips and the second is to marinate them and then of course cook them on the BBQ.
What you will need to create the Seitan Strips
- 2 c vital wheat gluten (I used Bob Mills Vegan Vital Gluten flour)
- 1-1.5 T onion powder
- 1-1.5 T garlic powder
- 1/4 c nutritional yeast
- 1/2 t black pepper
- 2 c water
- 1 1/2 veggie bouillion
- 2 T tahini
- 2 T Bragg Soy Seasoning
- 10 drops of liquid smoke
- BBQ sauce
How to make the Seitan BBQ Vegan Ribs
- Preheat oven till 350
- Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper
- Mix the water with the bouillion cube until disolved, set aside
- Measure out all the dry ingredients, wheat gluten, spices, nutritional yeast and place in a large mixing bowl
- Add the other wet ingredients to the water mixture, Tahini, Soy Seasoning, liquid smoke and mix well
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well. The mixture will take on an elastic dough like texture. Mix well, kneading as you would dough.
- When the dough is well mixed and stretchy, spread on the parchment paper evenly on the pan. This will take quite awhile as the dough will keep springing back into its original shape.
- Once you have spread the dough to all corners of the pan, score the dough into sixteen equal pieces.
- Place the pan in the preheated oven for up to 60 minutes or until the seitan is golden brown and takes on a fairly dense texture.
- When the Seitan Strips are cooked, cut and separate the Seitan Strips .
- Cover the Seitan Strips with your favourite BBQ sauce. Put lots on as much will get soaked up. Put more on that you think you should. Let the Seitan Strips soak in the sauce for a couple hours or more. I have a really good homemade BBQ sauce recipe right here.
- Heat up the BBQ and then turn down to medium. Place the Seitan Strips on the grill and turn often. Baste with more BBQ sauce as needed.
- Keep turning until the Seitan Strips take on a slightly caramelised look to the sauce.
- Remove and serve with all your favourite sides. We had grilled corn, potatoes and some baked garden fresh tomatoes with ours. I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised how good this really is and will be wanting to have more asap.
