Roti is an unleavened flatbread made of atta flour – the softest lovely flour in the world! IMHO. This recipe is so easy to make and just fun. Watching the roti puff up is a sight to see. It’s best to use a flame at the end vs a pan to finish the delicious vegan roti. It can be cooked completely in a pan, you might just not get all the beautiful air pockets that make it so unique.
I love my roti as a great vehicle to dip and devour food such as dahl or curry.
What will you need to make this Vegan Roti Recipe
- 10 oz (285 g) atta flour
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 7 1/2 oz water
- Flour for rolling
- Melted plant-based butter for brushing
How to make this Delicious Vegan Roti Recipe
- Combine the flour, oil, and salt in a bowl.
- Add water and mix
- Knead the dough until it is smooth and not sticky.
- If you must add flour or water to get the right texture, do it in small increments.
- Divide your dough into 10 equal pieces and roll each into a smooth ball.
- Cover with a clean towel and let rest.
- When you are ready to cook…. sprinkle a little extra flour on your work surface
- Take each ball, flatten it with your hand and lightly cover in the flour.
- Roll out into a roundish shape.
- Using a hot pan, place the roti in the heat and let it cook till it starts to bubble.
- Then move it to the flame and let it bubble and continue to cook. Cook both sides. This is a very short process. It’s okay if you get a bit of char, that’s what gives it such awesome flavour.
- An option is to brush them with a bit of melted butter after they are cooked. I skip this step.
- Continue to cook the extra balls of dough and place the finished roti in an oven-proof dish covered with a damp tea towel and place in the warm oven till you are ready to eat.
