Puff Pastry One Appetizer One Dessert. Are you looking for a fun and easy appetizer for a party, a few friends dropping by, to take for a pot luck dinner, or a snack for your kids? How about a quick dessert, you can prepare ahead of time? If so, look no further, I have just the recipe for you.
I wanted to do something fun and I decided to make some roll ups. I made a sweet and savoury version and invited my non-vegan friends Mel and Fiel over to do some food testing. Always a fun thing to do!
As with most recipes, it started with an idea and then evolved from there. I wanted to elevate the sausages in a blanket concept. Add a bit of twist on the flavour – I hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Puff Pastry One Appetizer One Dessert
Ok for this experiment in fun vegan food, I decided to make both a savoury and sweet version, just because I could! Start off by buying some pre-made pastry, read the ingredients to be sure it vegan. I’ll let you know what I did and then use your imagination, try out some of your own ideas…. that’s the fun of cooking and playing with food.
What you will need for your Puff Pastry One Appetizer One Dessert
- 1 – 2 packages of pre-made pastry. I was trying to find puff pastry and could not so went with the regular pastry, it was excellent
Savoury filling ingredients:
- 1 package Vegan hot dogs or sausages. I used Fieldroast Apple Sage Sausages for mine
- 1 package Vegan cheese, slices cut into strips work well
- 2-3 Shallots, sliced thin
- 6-10 Medjool dates, sliced into strips
Sweet filling ingredients:
- 2-4 T cinnamon (depends how many sweet or savoury roll ups you make)
- 1 c brown sugar
- 2-3 T Vegan butter
- 1 c raisins
Extra Ingredients to finish your dishes
For the Savoury Puff Pastry – the Appetizer to make a couple dips you will need:
- Vegan mayonnaise
- Sriracha sauce
- Dijon mustard
For the Sweet Puff Pastry – the Dessert you will need:
- Fresh fruit
- Vegan Ice Cream
How to make your Sweet and Savoury Puff Pastry
You can make the roll ups ahead of time and just keep them ready on a pan in the fridge for when you are ready to cook.
Pre-heat your oven to 425 when you are ready to cook.
For the Savoury Puff Pastry
- Separate the dough into triangles
- Place a vegan sausage in the middle, cut it open
- Add cheese to the middle as well as some slices of shallots and medjool date
- Wrap up the dough around the ingredients
- Place on your cooking sheet
- Top with a slice of shallot and date on top, so pretty
- Bake in the oven till golden brown
- Serve hot with sauces. For my savoury sauces I mixed up some vegan mayo with sriracha sauce for one dip and mayo with Dijon for the other savoury dips
For the Sweet Puff Pastry
- Separate the dough into triangles
- Cover each triangle with a dab of vegan butter, add a sprinkle of raisins and a generous amount of brown sugar and cinnamon
- Roll up and place on a cooking sheet
- Bake in a lot oven till golden brown
- Serve with fresh fruit and ice cream
