My Little Indoor Herb Garden
My Little Indoor Herb Garden is so cute and something I hope to expand in the future. It’s so great to be able to lean over and pick a few of the herbs that you use frequently – right from the kitchen. I am lucky to have some outside too, I just like to have them so close.
I’m very fortunate that I have a outdoor space to grow a garden. As I write this blog my husband is working in the yard to make a new raised bed for this years planting. He is making 3 new beds altogether and I’m hoping he will build us a new deck out front and create some type of homemade self watering system for the garden…..he’s gonna be busy for sure. I love that we have the space and that my husband is willing and able to do this.
Anyway, enough about me and more about you making your own Little Indoor Herb Garden…what fun!!! Let’s get gardening….
My Little Indoor Herb Garden
My Little Indoor Herb Garden is something I’ve had on my mind for awhile. I thought it would be cool if you could just lean over and get some fresh herbs from your window sill or indoor garden. This is my first attempt, and I’m excited to see what happens. Its a bit of an experiment for sure.
I have an idea for something more permanent when I build the new breakfast bar in my kitchen….well that’s a whole other story….back to the Little Indoor Herb Garden.
As mentioned, I had been thinking about this indoor garden and our local big box store, Costco, had these indoor grow lights for sale so I thought, “why not!”
I started out with thinking what have I got access to at home and would I need to buy. We have a small kitchen. Where would the garden go? What herbs would I want to have? I decided on mint and chives (I have those outside and was able to get free plants) and I bought a thyme plant from the local garden shop. I really wanted some basil and as luck would have it, none of the local stores, that always have live plants, had any.
So thyme it is. The thyme in my garden needs to be replaced and if nothing else, this would be a good starter. I bought some potting soil, found some pots in the shed, bought one at the recycling depot and as mentioned splurged on the LED grow lights. I was ready to go.
It’s pretty straight forward…
- Fill your pots almost full of potting soil
- Shake the dirt from the garden plants or loosen the roots on the store bought plants
- Place the plants into the pots
- Fill with more potting soil to stabilize the plant
- Pat to remove air holes
- Leave a bit of room at the top of the pot, so that when you water, the water does not spill over
- Place the pots under the light or in a bright warm window
- Water now and water as needed to keep semi moist, do not over water or let get totally dry out
I started to grow My Little Indoor Herb Garden with the red light, the red is supposed to establish the roots. This would be good for the ones that were transplanted and it would give the thyme a better foundation in the new pot.
Now I’m on the blue light to grow leaves and bulk. I will leave them here as long as I have them under the light. The combo of both green and blue LED lights are for flowering or growing product stage. I do not want mine to flower, just to keep growing leaves.
A pretty cool light all in all. I’m thinking of doing some starter seeds for the garden next. Maybe some tomato seeds, I’ll see what I have.
Watch your little indoor herb garden grow. Have fun with your little experiment, kids would love this too!
Tip* When you harvest basil and other leafy type plants, pick the top sections off the plant, do not pick individual leaves as this may kill the plant.
So, what’s stopping you? All you need at a minimum is a 2′ x 2′ space by a window, 3 pots, 3 plants, some potting soil and a bit of time or should I say a bit of thyme!!!!
