Grow Your Own Salad and Spices
We are so fortunate to live in an area of Canada where we have a long growing season and we have a yard big enough to grow a decent garden. Ours is a work in progress and we are learning all the time what to grow, what grows and how much of what to grow. Its all a learning opportunity.
As I post pictures on my Instagram account (@veganonthego) I often get comments about how others would love to have a garden of their own and some of the wonderful veggies and spices that we harvest and showcase in our food.
The good news is there are so many new gardening techniques that almost anyone with a bit of space can grow some veggies and a few spices today.
I thought I would do some research and share some ideas and thoughts for you to consider…interested? Well keep reading…
Grow Your Own Salad and Spices
What I thought would be doable for a lot of folks is to grow some veggies for a simple salad and a couple of your favourite spices to add flavour to some of your favourite dishes and drinks.
For a salad what would work is to grow some lettuce, green onion, radishes and tomatoes. For the spices I was thinking of chives, basil and mint. All easy to grow and they only take a bit of space.
Where could you grow them. A few considerations:
- a single bed in a small yard
- a few pots on a balcony
- a vertical garden set up
I did a bit of research to make it easy for you and to inspire you to try growing something fresh. Once you get started, you will find more ways to grow more of your own foods.
Keep in mind at your initial investment might seem like a lot and most of the things you buy you will be able to use over the next growing season.
My own personal long term goal is to have an indoor herb garden, year round. I can pick my herbs and use them fresh everyday!
