Berbere Spice Blend

Berbere Spice Blend
Berbere Blend – an Ethiopian influenced spice blend – so warm and delicious

Have you ever tried Ethiopian food? It unique and soooo delicious.

I love the flavour profile of the Ethiopian food that I’ve tasted so far and I think it is cool that there are many more Ethiopian restaurants popping up in major cities.

Give it a try – super healthy, wonderful flavours, very vegan friendly.

Now in my course through Rouxbe we learned how to make our own spice blends. I was super excited when I saw the blend for Berbere as I love the flavour of Ethiopian food. Check out Rouxbe, such a cool online cooking school. https://rouxbe.com/

Since I made this recipe, I have used it in so many dishes, sauces, stir-fry – its that versatile and it adds just the right flavour. Its sweet, and a little spicy and just makes your food taste warm and comforting. Who doesn’t like that!

Ok its easy so let’s do it!

Berbere Spice Blend. This Ethiopian spice is traditionally the main flavour in many dishes in North Africa. With so many spices in the blend…it is sweet and hot. You can use it on a rub, in a marinade, to add warm flavours to sauces and stir-fry….use your imagination.

What you will need to make your Berbere Spice Blend:

I went to our bulk spice barn and picked up everything I needed in just the right amount too!

  • 2 t coriander seeds

  • 1 t fenugreek seeds
  • ½ t black peppercorns
  • ¼ t whole allspice
  • 6 white cardamom pods
  • 4 whole cloves
  • ½ c dried onion flakes
  • 5 dried chiles de arbol, stemmed, seeded and broken into small pieces ( I used the small red chillis, they worked well)
  • 3 T paprika
  • ½ t ground nutmeg
  • ½ t ground ginger
  • ½ t ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp sea salt (optional)

The jar was fuller when I made the mix, I wrote the blog later and this was what was left at that time. I like it in almost any savoury dish. I think it would be cool in the right sweet dish as well. Its that good.

To prepare the spice blend, add all the ingredients into a spice grinder. Blend thoroughly and store in a sealed container. Yep that’s it! Now you are ready to try them out and see what you think!
